A project-maturity review with a 14-week improvement path
Aged care provider
An independent PMO review using PMI OPM3 and related frameworks, completed in under four weeks and turned into a sequenced improvement roadmap.

Challenge
An established PMO and internal project capability wanted an independent view of maturity, governance, methods, templates and project execution quality.
An internal review had identified an opportunity to lift the quality of project execution.
The review needed to cover the PMO, project-management team, methods, templates, governance and controls, while taking the organisation’s own context into account.
The organisation wanted a benchmark-informed assessment followed by practical steps rather than a generic maturity score.
Approach
Align on the assessment. Explained and tailored the maturity framework, drawing on PMI OPM3, P3M3 and practical delivery models. Organisation-specific quality measures were incorporated before the evaluation began.
Examine the evidence. Used workshops, interviews, self-assessments and artefact reviews across the PMO, project teams, business and executives. Current methods, templates, operating data and benefits-management practices were tested against evidence of use.
Test the maturity view. Documented the current state, differences between perceived and demonstrated maturity, and the nearest realistic maturity horizon for each dimension.
Build the uplift path. Presented the findings to executives and the board, then built a sequenced roadmap for PMO and benefits-management improvement that accounted for timing, investment and organisational capacity.
Maturity pathway
Three phases from benchmark to action
The review separated framework alignment, evidence-based evaluation and the practical socialisation of findings and next steps.- 01
Framework alignment
Set the maturity model, review existing methods and incorporate organisation-specific measures.
- 02
Evaluation
Use workshops, interviews, self-assessment, artefacts and operating evidence to establish maturity.
- 03
Socialisation
Explain the findings, test priorities and agree a realistic path to the next maturity horizon.
Outcomes
The review identified differences between perceived and demonstrated maturity. Several areas compared well with the benchmarks, while project planning, scope management and organisational planning required focused improvement.
The work was completed in under four weeks. Executives and the board received an actionable 14-week roadmap covering best-practice standards, procedural documentation and PMO training.
